Never in a million years did I ever think I would have a voice on the legendary radio station that I grew up listening to in Byhalia, MS. I used to skate at the Red Banks Roller Skating rink with friends to the Walrus rockin’ Van Halen and Thin Lizzy and lay in bed on Sunday nights listening to Charlie Kendall’s Metal Shop (“The Only Rock and Roll Show with Teeth”). I’m most certain that show subliminally influenced me to want to be a rock DJ. Who would have thunk that a little adopted girl from Guadalajara, Mexico would become the first Latina DJ on Rock 103 (nowROCK 102.7)? Awesome!

For the last 7 years I have had the honor of playing and promoting Memphis’ finest asset - ourMemphis MadeMusic. My radio sensei, Ditch/IHeartMedia Memphis, is entirely responsible for my broadcasting break. He took a chance on me and empowered me to become producer and host of Memphis Made. Without him, I would have never become “Catrina with Rock 103” It has not only helped define my career, but fortunately forced me to become a better bass player. I am testament to the mantra that you become who you surround yourself with.

The interviews with bands and musicians have all been therapeutic for me. Hearing highs and lows, struggles and triumphs of our Memphis Music Community has helped me become a much better person, which is ultimately what is most important for us all in the journey of life. When our musicians walk into the studio to share their experiences and tunes, I am reminded how fortunate we are to be connected through music.

As they always do, the winds of change have blown in my direction and it is now time for the next chapter in my book. I am happy that the station will continue Memphis Made on the legacy that I helped build and the new show host will be announced soon. I am also happy to announce that I am now working for what will be the third largest vinyl manufacturing plant in North America by the end of 2019 – our very own Memphis Record Pressing. I’m proud to have called co-owner/co-founder Brandon Seavers my friend of some 26 years and what he and Mark Yoshida have built here in Memphis is a force to be reckoned with. I am honored to now be a part of the most impressive MRP team continuing the Memphis Made Music legacy.

You’ll still see me at shows and I will continue the good fight for Memphis Made Music through the boards on which I serve: Music Export Memphis, Memphis Music Archives (details soon) and the Memphis Chapter of the Recording Academy. Thank you to everyone who has unconditionally supported the show over the last 7 years. Special gratitude goes to the bands/artists and the die-hard Memphis Music fans. Please continue to do so.

My last show will be on August 11th which is the day before my birthday and I will now consider it my “rebirth” day. Keep rockin’ and reppin’ that Memphis Made Music well and you will definitely be hearing from me again real soon. And as always, remember, I’ve said at the closing of all my shows for the last 7 years, “it’s real important for you to keep it low and heavy! - Catrina, Producer/Host - Memphis Made
