Steve Perry Reveals New Song, 'Traces' Album Release Date

A flurry of activity on former Journey singer Steve Perry's newly established social media accounts culminated this week with an official announcement about the frontman's first release in 24 years.

Perry's long-awaited new album, Traces, is not just his first release in decades, but also his return to music. The singer has performed live only sparingly since officially leaving Journey in 1996.

He says in a statement that Traces represents him "Putting 30 years into 10 songs."

"I started writing and recording these songs with the creative freedom that I was the only one who would ever hear them," Perry says. "Along the way, I rediscovered my love for music. Each track represents traces of my past, but is also a hopeful look into the future. I invite you to listen with an open heart."

Nine of the songs are originals. The tenth track is Perry's reimagined cover of The Beatles' "I Need You."

The album is due out October 5. Fans can pre-order it here.

Perry's last solo album was 1994's For the Love of Strange Medicine.

Perry has gradually returned to public life since Journey's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction last year

He appeared on American Idol this spring to congratulate a contestant on her rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'."

He recently filmed a CBS Sunday Morning segment which is scheduled to air October 7, two days after Traces is released.

Perry was also caught in a recording studio, singing backgrounds for Toad the Wet Sprocket

The singer has yet to announce a tour or any live performances. But after so many years off the road, you can't blame him for dipping his toes in the water before diving in.

Here's the track listing for Traces:

"No Erasin'"

"We're Still Here"

"Most of All"

"No More Cryin'"

"In the Rain"

"Sun Shines Gray"

"You Belong to Me"

"Easy to Love"

"I Need You"

"We Fly"
